The Early Show
Save The Music segment
15 April 2004

NARRATOR: …or in New York City. Inspiration is another cornerstone of Save The Music. Which is why groups like Hanson have been involved with the program since it first started back in 97.

TAYLOR: It doesn't matter, you know, that we're a celebrity or if you're just somebody's dad or somebody's mom or just a friend. Just walking in there and saying "I'm gonna take the time out to walk in here and talk to you about this and make this valuable."

ZAC: It's about going in there and showing kids the passion and stuff for the music.

ISAAC: You guys who are 9, I started writing songs when I was 9. I learned C, F, and G on the piano.

NARRATOR: So, even though PS40 in New York City got their instruments four years ago, visits like this one keep the kids motivation high.

TEACHER: Who in here wants to become a professional musician? [kids raise their hands]

NARRATOR: Career or not, the point is these kids now have the opportunity to be part of a music program and a chance to expand their worlds.

ISAAC: Music in general helps kids learn. It helps with math, it helps with reading, and so on. Cos I think part of the thing is, your brain becomes more well-rounded. You have to use different parts of your brain.

NARRATOR: And who knows, maybe the next Hanson is sitting right here in this very classroom… or, maybe not.
