28 April 2004FEMALE: Puberty was obviously good to the brothers Hanson. Seven years after their huge single "MMMBop" threatened to make them one-hit wonders, the boys of Hanson are back, this time on their own terms. David Adelson tells all.
DAVID: That was then [footage from "MMMBop" video]. This is now [Hanson performing "Penny & Me" in the studio].
TAYLOR: "MMMBop" has been… was a great way to open up the doors for us when we first came out, and so I think, what you hope is you can be really proud of that and you can be really proud of something else.
DAVID: That "something else" is Underneath, Hanson's new album which sold over 30,000 copies in its first week What makes that figure remarkable is Underneath was released by Hanson's own record company. Yes, folks. Hanson is indie rock.
TAYLOR: We really want to do something special and I think starting our own record company, having an independent label, really building things on a grassroots level and touching our fan base and building that is possibly an element that's going really to change the way people see this band.
DAVID: Breaking with their major label after fighting over their musical direction, Hanson has ingeniously used the internet and relentless touring to create a fan base that seems to have no problem growing older with them. Believe it or not, in a time when the traditional music industry is crumbling, Hanson is emerging as a prime example of a successful new business model.
TAYLOR: That's a lot of people that are going to be looking for different answers to the new world of the music industry and the entertainment industry as the internet comes into play and as companies evolve and this 3CG Records is just our answer to how we're going to put out music in the future.
