STEPHEN, DJ: It is now just after 8 and I am joined in the studio by the guys who I've been itching to get on the show all week. Can you please welcome them down, it's Hanson!
ISAAC: Hey.
ZAC: Hellooo.
STEPHEN: It's unbelievable that you are here sitting in my studio, I just can't believe it.
TAYLOR: It's crazy, yeah.
ISAAC: Well we're happy to be here. We're glad that you took the time.
STEPHEN: No, it's so cool, it's so cool because I was mentioning that you were coming into the show; I've been chatting to everybody saying "Hanson is coming in, if you've got any questions let me know, we'll sort this out." And I had to go twice, "yes, you heard me right, Hanson, they're coming in to the show." It's been a while, something like I would say-and I'm going to take a guess-I was working it out while I was on the way in today, about 4 years maybe since your last album?
ISAAC: Yeah, 4 years since the last album.
TAYLOR: Actually, it's almost 5 now, cos 2000.
ISAAC: Which is just ridiculously scary; I feel ashamed that it's been that long.
TAYLOR: You know though, there's many reasons but the biggest, the coolest thing has been coming back with this record and getting to see the fans and how amazing it is to see them coming forward with us and still being so loyal, still being so attentive to what's going on, it's cool.
STEPHEN: Cos people are still stalking you like crazy! Let's be honest. Which is great.
TAYLOR: What's great is the stalkers, you know?
STEPHEN: They're all so cool.
ZAC: "Why did you decide to do music?" "Stalkers. I really wanted stalkers. That was it."
STEPHEN: You wanted people sending you really crazy stuff in the post and stuff like that.
TAYLOR: No, definitely not.
STEPHEN: I remember seeing one of my friends, and this sprang back into my mind today. She's called Monica and she was like your biggest fan and she was in one of my lessons when I was doing (?) and she used to follow you guys around. You'd probably know her if you saw her, she is that scary. But I just thought, "wow, that's brilliant." Now you started out in a time when pop was on a massive high and I think your sound's developed as you've gone on obviously as your third album's gonna be out at the beginning of Feb and I mean, it's a different sound. It was slightly more rocky last time and it's a similar sort of thing, it's very… I don't know cos I've heard the new album, I'm in a lucky position cos some people listening haven't. And has this developed a bit more, are your pop days firmly behind you now?
ZAC: Well I still think… I firmly believe that we still make pop music.
STEPHEN: You do make pop music.
ZAC: But we're older guys. When you're younger and you have higher voices it sounds a certain way and people take a certain approach towards it.
TAYLOR: I think it's a lot easier for people to sort of see our music really for what it is when you've got a package of guys in their early 20s as opposed to guys in their early teens. I think in a lot of ways the way we write songs… we've never written about stupid stuff, we've always written about just life and love and things that affect you but obviously you're going forward, you're improving as musicians, you're growing as people and this record is definitely a growth. You know, we produced the record, we worked with some very cool people like Matthew Sweet and Gregg Alexander…
ISAAC: Danny Kortchmar who worked on Billy Joel's album River of Dreams, he produced "Penny & Me."
TAYLOR: So obviously you're moving forward, but you know, I think it's pop music. I mean, The Beatles were pop… and I always think of pop as the thing that sticks in your head. I mean, that's what pop is.
STEPHEN: That is what pop is all about.
TAYLOR: It's not about being slick, it's about being memorable.
STEPHEN: Well now, talking about all these changes, I mean things really have moved on cos I mean some of you guys, you got families now and everything.
TAYLOR: Yeah, I've got a 2 year old son.
STEPHEN: Wow, that's so crazy!
ZAC: And a wife!
STEPHEN: Cos I think for everyone who's listening is a bit like you guys never really left, you know? We still look back and we think of you.
ISAAC: It's more like a family reunion.
STEPHEN: It is like a family reunion!
ISAAC: You show up and you look so different, yet you're the same…
ZAC: It's like, "it's been four years! You look older!" YEAH!
TAYLOR: I think actually one of the funnier things is you'll meet someone nod they'll be like, "wow, you're older!" And we're like, "yeah, you are too…" It's called time.
STEPHEN: You guys have your own record label as well now, which came through and I thought was worth a mention. That's quite good gang. You're doing the business yourself.
ZAC: Well the thing with the record label was we were originally signed by a company called Mercury about, what, 9 years ago?
ISAAC: Eight years ago, yeah.
ZAC: The thing with that was, as we went and sort of finished up and started working on the second record and released that, that company merged and all the sudden there started being all these mergers of record labels and staff were being fired and rehired and we found our self in a place where none of the people we were originally working with were part of the company anymore, so the only way for us to find stability in the record industry was to form our own company so that we can say, "we went to work with this guy…"
TAYLOR: It's really cool actually, because you know, we've always been a very hands-on band. We just love what we do, we love to get involved, we love… we're kind of…
ISAAC: Control freaks.
TAYLOR: Yeah. We're perfectionists, so we love stuff to be great, and so to own the record company and just to have the flexibility to move and change makes things even more exciting.
STEPHEN: Well let's play the new single, it's "Penny & Me," and we love it a lot! It's going to be released next week so make sure you go and buy it. It's just a really great track. Can you guys just give us a really quick introduction into it?
TAYLOR: Absolutely. Here it is, "Penny & Me."
"Penny & Me"
STEPHEN: Invicta FM, this is The Fridge, it's the new single from Hanson, it's gonna be out next week. It's "Penny & Me," love that song. *claps*
ZAC: It's only the 4 of us in here.
TAYLOR: We're making noise of our own.
STEPHEN: Yeah, I know. Well if we had a big crowd in the studio that would be cool. That's good.
TAYLOR: We couldn't fit that many people in here.
STEPHEN: No, it's not huge.
ZAC: Well, considering it's only a fridge.
STEPHEN: Well yeah, exactly, we're going in with the key theme of the show, which is fine. That single is pretty self-explanatory again, we love it. We love it.
ZAC: The thing about "Penny & Me" though is it's not only a song about a girl, it's really a song about music also and about how Penny really represents not just a girl but all the people in your life and all the music you've listened to and all the things that make you who you are.
ISAAC: Penny being from "Penny Lane," there's a reference to Nick Drake's album Pink Moon, "Feeling Alright" by Dave Mason and a bunch of other things like that, so there's like both music and girls.
ZAC: It's a girl and it's just life experiences.
ISAAC: Music and girls, exactly what you need in life.
STEPHEN: Okay, we've got a quiz going on that involves a bar chart, I've got 10 questions here on the 90s that I'm going to ask you guys and obviously it is little bit like a first come sort of thing so just sort of give it a go and we'll see who gets the highest score. There's no prizes, it's all about the glory of winning!
ISAAC: Exactly.
ZAC: The glory of being better than your fellow band mate.
TAYLOR: We're all brutally competitive.
STEPHEN: Here we go: "Wannabe."
TAYLOR: Yes! Sorry.
STEPHEN: … was a hit single for which group?
ISAAC: TLC.
ZAC: No!
STEPHEN: Wrong answer!
ZAC: "Wannabe," uh, uh…
ISAAC: Oh, sorry.
TAYLOR: I was gonna say Spice Girls for a second.
STEPHEN: Right answer. Right answer.
TAYLOR: I should not know that.
STEPHEN: Should you not know that?
ZAC: I thought it was that, and then I went, you know what, "I don't even want to say that."
TAYLOR: I started to think Desiree, "you gotta be bad, you gotta be…"
ZAC: That's gotta be one of them.
STEPHEN: Okay, which band was Robbie Williams a member of?
ZAC: Boyzone? No…
STEPHEN: No.
ISAAC: Take That.
STEPHEN: Isaac, is the right answer!
ZAC: I don't know, I'm from America, we don't…
STEPHEN: I know, but you've got 90s history here. Okay, name any single from The Backstreet Boys.
ISAAC: Uhh… is it "Backstreet's Back," is that one?
STEPHEN: Yes, that is one as well Isaac.
TAYLOR: Is it "Backstreet's Back Alright?"
STEPHEN: Just "Backstreet's Back."
TAYLOR: Oh, really, I thought the "alright" was a key part of it.
ZAC: There's parenthesis.
STEPHEN: "Where's The Love" was a 90s hit for which group?
ZAC: Hanson?
STEPHEN: Zac, you get that one cos you came in first.
TAYLOR: I thought that was a Black Eyed Peas song.
STEPHEN: It is also a Black Eyed Peas song.
ISAAC: Actually, they say "Where IS The Love" as opposed to "where's."
STEPHEN: That's a good point. Okay, she was the country singer who was quite hard to impress. She was.
ZAC: Shania Twain?
STEPHEN: Yes, is the right answer! Taylor! This is so good, I love the quiz at the moment. It's the best of 10 as well by the way, I feel bad, gotta make it fair. What's the full name of Ginger Spice?
TAYLOR: Oh God, I have no clue.
ISAAC: Oh, oh, full name, I don't know…
STEPHEN: Come on Isaac.
ISAAC: All I know is Geri Halliwell.
STEPHEN: Yes, that's correct!
ISAAC: But is that her full name though?
STEPHEN: Yeah, yeah, Geri Halliwell.
ISAAC: Does she have a middle name?
TAYLOR: Whatever!
STEPHEN: Which 90s pop group was recognized for a set of dance moves for every track?
TAYLOR: Hmm, NSYNC?
STEPHEN: Mmm, no, they were a British pop group, they sang hits such as "5, 6, 7, 8."
TAYLOR: Oh God, are you talking about the A Teens?
STEPHEN: No, five. There's three gals, two guys.
TAYLOR: I have no clue.
STEPHEN: I'm talking Steps.
TAYLOR: Steps, okay.
ISAAC: I'm sorry, we don't know them.
STEPHEN: You don't know them? Okay. Maybe that one was a hard one.
ISAAC: It was a little bit more UK for us.
TAYLOR: Sorry, sorry about that.
STEPHEN: That's fine. Complete the title of this song: "Livin La Vida _______."
ZAC: "Loca."
TAYLOR: "Loca."
STEPHEN: Who got that?
ISAAC: I think Zac got it.
TAYLOR: I think I'm losing here.
STEPHEN: Okay. Kian, Nicky, Mark, Brian, Shane, all part of which group?
ISAAC: Boyzone. Right?
STEPHEN: Nearly. What came after Boyzone?
TAYLOR: Zone? Boy?
STEPHEN: No!
TAYLOR: You said "nearly," I thought I just needed to split the difference.
STEPHEN: It was Westlife.
TAYLOR: Westlife.
ISAAC: OHH! ERRR!
STEPHEN: Oh, you knew that. One more here. "Reach" was sung by who? The guys also danced as well this band.
TAYLOR: "Reach?" God, you're hitting the UK stuff that we don't know!
STEPHEN: I know, but I just thought I'd test you.
TAYLOR: I know, just…
ISAAC: Now we feel like dumbasses.
STEPHEN: No, no, no, it's fine, you're not expected to know. Should we pass on that one? But it does mean that we have a winner.
TAYLOR: Oh no.
STEPHEN: Zac! Isaac, you won it!
ISAAC: Oh, I won it?
STEPHEN: We'll have an official toast to you or something, I don't know. You know, we got to stick on something else now. It's supposed to be of your choosing. But I'm sort of thinking…
ISAAC: Like a song?
STEPHEN: Yeah, but I kind of want to play "MMMBop." I don't know why, I just do, but I mean, we don't have to, it can be something else that you choose.
TAYLOR: Well we can play whatever you want, it's your show. It's your show.
STEPHEN: Yeah I know, but then you're the guests and I'd feel really bad.
TAYLOR: Wow, we're being so nice.
ISAAC: But we'd never pick our own music if we were gonna pick it on the show so we can't really pick "MMMBop."
STEPHEN: Actually, that's true.
ZAC: Cos if you had to pick your own stuff it's like saying, "man, I'm really hot!" *laughs*
ISAAC: Exactly, if you said to Bono, "Bono, I really want you to play something!" Do you really think he'd do "Sunday Bloody Sunday" or something?
STEPHEN: Yeah, yeah, okay, point taken. Okay, well something else of your choosing.
TAYLOR: Okay, something really great.
ISAAC: Oh, man.
TAYLOR: New? Old?
STEPHEN: On my computer.
TAYLOR: On your computer…
STEPHEN: As long as it's on the computer. If we've got it I'll play it.
TAYLOR: Okay, it is a song by…
ZAC: Desiree? *laughs* You sang it earlier.
TAYLOR: That's a good idea.
ISAAC: God, we can come up with one right now, come on.
TAYLOR: How about the new song by Keane that you were talking about?
ISAAC: Yeah, that's good. What is it, "Everybody's Changing?"
TAYLOR: "Everybody's Changing" we can do or "This Is The Last Time."
TAYLOR: "Everybody's Changing."
STEPHEN: Okay, Invicta FM's The Fridge, as chosen by Hanson. Here we go, this is Keane and "Everybody's Changing."
"Everybody's Changing"
STEPHEN: Invicta FM, The Fridge, this is Stephen and Hanson hanging out with us in the studio tonight. Guys, fantastic choice on the old Keane record that we had before that, great choice. I just want to say thank you so much for coming down and hanging, it's been great. It's been so much fun. When can we expect to see you guys on tour, cos I know you did a few acoustic sets last year.
TAYLOR: Actually, we don't have the confirmed dates yet but we're hoping to be here in either March or April and we're going to be all over the UK and traveling around Europe also.
ZAC: You should go to hanson.net to check for dates, that's where the official dates will be.
TAYLOR: The official site.
ISAAC: All the information will be up there and we're just really stoked about coming back and playing cos you know, I mean, it's such a big part of who we are, playing live, and unfortunately the UK and European audience hadn't seen it as much and we're excited to be able to show it to them.
ZAC: Ike's wanted to show them a lot of stuff I guess!
ALL: Woooo!
STEPHEN: We got "Penny & Me," the single which is out next week, we got the album which I believe is on February 7th is it?
ISAAC: I think that's about right.
STEPHEN: It's a really, really great album as well, so we're looking forward to seeing some of that and we're gonna get some signed bits and pieces from you as well and give them away very soon on the show so it's all good, but guys, thank you very much for coming in! And we'll catch up with you on the next single when you're back in the UK! See you then!
