KJ 103
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
03 April 2000

TJ: KJ 103, this is TJ and Tooker. Tooker, do we have Hanson on the phone? Is that right do you have them?

TOOK: Yes.

TJ: Oh, we have Hanson on the phone.

TOOK: Yes.

TJ: Oh, this is exciting stuff, can we go now, or what?

TOOK: Yeah, go ahead and just...

TJ: I mean, this is from London, so I dunno. Who do we have here?

TOOK: We have Zac.

ZAC: This is Zac.

TOOK: Hey Zac!

TJ: It's Zac from Hanson.

TOOK: Very good! Now Zac from Hanson, how ya doing?

ZAC: I’m doing good, and you?

TOOK: Well, we're doing just wonderful.

TJ: Zac, you're sounding mature there buddy.

ZAC: Why thank you.

TJ: You're sounding a little deep.

TOOK: Can I just tell ya something there Zac, I am a closet big time Hanson fan.

ZAC: Why thank you.

TOOK: I love "Where's The Love!"

TJ: That's his song!

TOOK: Believe me, I’ve probably listened to “Where’s The Love” thousands of times. I love that song.

ZAC: Well, now you're not a closet Hanson fan anymore.

TJ: Hey! He’s out of the closet!

TOOK: Well there ya go.

TJ: Zac, so you guys are in London now?

ZAC: Yea, we're in London promoting the new record.

TJ: By the way, great job on the new record.

TOOK: Yes, I like it. The new one is great.

ZAC: Thank you very much. Yes, we're excited about it.

TOOK: Tell us a little bit about the new one. You guys are obviously starting to mature; your voices are starting to mature. You guys did a really nice job with the lyrics as far as working them to your voice and the whole deal.

ZAC: Yeah, see, it's just slightly evolved, maybe a little mature as people. A couple of people have told us that but yeah, I think over three years you just kinda evolve. You listen to different music. You have different experiences. In this case, your voices get a little lower and deeper, so you know, in 3 years you change a little bit and obviously the music changes a little bit also. With you.

TJ: How old are you now Zac? 15?

ZAC: No, I’m 14.

TJ: 14, you'll be 15 when, this fall?

ZAC: Yes, this fall.

TJ: Okay, alright, see I told ya I’m a Hanson man. I know the birthdays.

TOOK: Now, who are some of the bands that kinda influenced you as far as this album is concerned, since it is a different sound.

ZAC: I think as far as music stuff, just stuff we listen to. Jonny Lang, Blues Traveler, Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow, Black Crowes, ya know, just a lot of bands.

TJ: Anything with a crow in it you like huh?

TJ: Now Zac, we have the KJ 103 Superstar Auctions yesterday for the Oklahoma City national memorial and we want to thank you guys for your donations. And one of the items up for bid, we told a listener that if they bid on it or if they purchased it, they could come on the air and actually talk to you this morning. Go ahead and introduce yourself to Zac from Hanson.

MADELINE: Hi. I’m Madeline.

ZAC: Hey, how are you?

MADELINE : I’m okay

TJ: Ya know Zac, I might have to say that Madeline might be your biggest fan.

TOOK: I have never seen a bigger fan than Madeline. Now Madeline, go ahead and talk, you'll probably get to talk to a few of them so go ahead and if you have any questions for Zac, go ahead and fire them off here.

MADELINE : What's your favorite song on the new album?

ZAC: Hmm. Well, we've gotten that a lot so the problem is being a fan of many bands. You kinda have favorites on the album and with us because you wrote the record and you wrote the songs, it's kinda, it's less that way because you've written the songs and they kinda mean something to you.

TJ: They're all personal to you guys.

ZAC: Yeah. Exactly, it's all a little more personal. I don't think I would ever say 'best written song ever' but one of the songs that didn't get on the album that I really beat myself over the head for a long time was a song called, "Bridges Of Stone." I think that song is just a really cool song. It’s one of the only songs that was on the album at one point but actually was kinda personal experience. It’s about some friends of ours who got a divorce and the guy kinda was saying "Was it me? Was it her?" You know, "Why did this go wrong?" And eventually saying, "You've just got to move on and you can't let it you know."

TJ: That's kinda deep, Zac.

ZAC: I guess.

TJ: You're really reaching in and pulling out those emotions at age 14 now aren't ya?

TOOK: I think Madeline has another question here.

MADELINE : How long did it take to write a majority of the songs?

ZAC: Majority of the songs were written on tour or so.

TJ: It's kinda never ending for you guys. You’re always writing, aren't you?

ZAC: Definitely. One of the songs called "Can’t Stop" was written actually five years ago. It was started as an a cappella song. And then you know in 99 we found out the chords and decided to finish the song. We just thought it was a really cool grove and fun to play live.

TOOK: Alright, do you have anymore questions for Zac?

MADELINE : Why do you have all these nicknames?

ZAC: Why do I have nicknames?

TJ: Yea, I’ve heard, "hell on wheels"

TOOK: Sugar high.

TJ: Prozac.

TOOK: Animal.

TJ: Are you just wild and crazy Zac?

ZAC: I think I was just a little too much for most people so I kinda got a little hyper. I dunno, we all have nicknames.

TJ: Can we talk to one of your brothers as well too?

ZAC: Sure, one second, let me see if, let me go grab one of them.

TOOK: I understand Isaac is going to be the next one. Madeline has already started to cry.

TOOK: What do you think of Isaac?

MADELINE : He's my favorite!

TOOK: Alright, we're going to talk to him next, so hold on.

TJ: Hi Isaac!

ISAAC: Hey there, how are you?

TJ: Isaac from Hanson is joining us!

TOOK: Now Isaac, what we're going to do is we're going to step back and let Madeline do the interview. Madeline, can you talk over your tears?

MADELINE : I’ll try.

TOOK: She's crying right now. Go ahead.

MADELINE : Okay. Isaac, first off, I just want to tell you that I love you.

ISAAC: Well, thank you. I don't know how to respond to that.

TJ: I love you, too.

ISAAC: Wait? What? No? We’ll have to talk about that later TJ.

MADELINE : Okay, what are your favorite foods?

ISAAC: What is my favorite food? I don't know! Well, it would of course have to have to be generous right? I wouldn't necessarily be able to pick just one thing. I would say it would be anything Mexican or Chinese.

TJ: I think that's everyone's answer.

ISAAC: No, no, no. I’m sorry, I said Chinese? I meant Italian.

TOOK: Notice how he said it Italian, not i-talian. We are fellow Okies.

ISAAC: I’m combining my black with my Oklahoman.

MADELINE : What hobbies do you guys do?

ISAAC: What hobbies? Well, we have dirt bikes, which is fun. So, we ride those from time to time whenever we get the opportunity, which is cool. But hobbies, gosh! I dunno, we rock climb a little bit.

MADELINE : Yeah, I know, I read that in MOE.

ISAAC: In MOE #7... Rockreation and... let’s see. Surfing, basketball, you know just anything.

TJ: Does your surfing background come from growing up in Tulsa? I mean, does that kinda help?

ISAAC: It really does. I mean you have no idea how much great swells you can get at Grand Lake.

TJ: See, you can have your two brothers do a cannon ball in the pool and ride the waves!

ISAAC: There, I caught my first tube man.

MADELINE : I really have to know why you cut your hair!

ISAAC: Why I cut my hair.

TJ: Well, first off Madeline, do you like it better before or now?

MADELINE : I like it, but I really miss your long hair!

ISAAC: Well, I cut it off because I got tired of it. It’s just hair, I may grow it back, you never know.

MADELINE : You look good either way.

ISAAC: I think it would be really funny if you were like, "Actually, I really hate it. You don't look good in the short hair, it's really ugly."

MADELINE : Well, at first, when I very first saw it, I was like, crying because...

TJ: Isaac, just to let you know, she cries anytime she sees you so. It’s not all about the hair.

MADELINE : I want to know if you guys have girlfriends, and please be honest!

ISAAC: Well, no I do not have a girlfriend. Neither do Taylor or Zac currently. But, that does not mean that we aren't dating people.

MADELINE : Well, thank you for being honest.

ISAAC: By the way Madeline, how old are you?

MADELINE : I’m 13.

ISAAC: You're 13? Cool. I just had to ask.

TJ: Don't you have a song on your album called "Madeline?"

ISAAC: Yes, we do, and I am sure she knows that very well.

MADELINE : It's my favorite song in the whole world. I listen to it constantly.

ISAAC: Well, I have to admit to say you're biased. "Let me see, there's a song on the record called Madeline, my name is Madeline, therefore, I kinda like it."

MADELINE : You sing my favorite part too!

TJ: Guys, we love the new single. Is Taylor around? We want to talk to the third Hanson, is he available?

ISAAC: He is possibly available. I’ll have to go get him real quick. He’s in the other room,

MADELINE : Thank you Isaac, I love you so much!

ISAAC: Oh, you're very welcome, it was nice talking to you so. Cool.

TJ: We're talking to the Hanson boys this morning. Woo-hoo!

TOOK: Yes, I am fired up about that! I think I am too.

TJ: Taylor is with us! This completes the Hanson trifective this morning.

TAYLOR: Yes, we've all now been here.

TJ: We just played your song. Great new single out now!

TAYLOR: Awesome!

TJ: It's got the cool vocal harmony and it rocks a little and it's got the slow down piano thing. It really exemplifies what I think Hanson is all about.

TAYLOR: Well, I’m glad you feel that way. That song in a lot of ways is the reason we decided to title the album that. We felt it sort of represented where we're going musically as far as the songs we're writing and a lot of what we want people to think of as Hanson.

TOOK: When are you going to start touring on the album?

TAYLOR: Right now we're promoting the record all over the world really. We’ll be in Europe and South America, Asia, but at the beginning of the summer, we're going to start playing shows and doing a lot of touring.

TJ: Now Tay, yesterday we had the KJ 103 superstar auctions we raised $37,000.

TAYLOR: That is awesome!

TJ: For the Oklahoma national memorial and you guys being from Oklahoma, I know that's in your hearts.

TAYLOR: Absolutely.

TOOK: And Madeline bid on your autographed CD and we invited her into the studio this morning and talk to all members of Hanson and you're the last one!

MADELINE : Hi.

TAYLOR: Hey Madeline. How’s it goin?

MADELINE : I’m okay.

TAYLOR: Are you okay? Are you not feeling good?

MADELINE : I’m a little nervous right now because I've been waiting for this moment for three years.

TAYLOR: Well, it's great to talk to you Madeline.

MADELINE : Thanks.

TAYLOR: You must like the song “Madeline.”

TJ: She does.

TOOK: Don't make her cry again Taylor.

TOOK: We appreciate you guys coming on.

TJ: You guys are our favorite band.

MADELINE: Thank you guys so much.

TAYLOR: Thanks Madeline.

MADELINE: You're welcome.

TJ: Are all of your dreams true yet Madeline? Now that you've got to talk to Hanson?

MADELINE: Oh yeah.
