Kyle & Jackie O Show
Australia
27 September 2004KYLE: It's the Kyle & Jackie O Show around the country. The phone number here is 13 10 60. Now what do you think when I play you a snippet of this song? (plays "MMMBop"). They come flooding back! When Hanson came to Australia it was really like The Beatles landing in this country.
JACKIE O: It was huge!
KYLE: It was hysteria.
JACKIE O: Everyone was kind of wrapped up in the whole Hanson mania, including myself.
KYLE: Oh, you were walking around with Hanson t-shirts on.
JACKIE O: Oh, I loved Hanson; I thought they were fantastic, and you know, they are back with a vengeance and we have got Zac on the phone.
KYLE: He was the little one!
JACKIE O: Well not anymore, he's 18 years old! Zac, how you going?
KYLE: Hi man!
ZAC: Hello, how are you doing?
KYLE: We're doing good!
JACKIE O: Good, good!
KYLE: How weird does it feel to talk to someone that I haven't seen since they were like, a small child? How are you buddy, you good?
ZAC: I'm just alright, how are you doing?
KYLE: Very good!
JACKIE O: Good, good!
KYLE: Now we're a lot older than when you probably last saw us when you were here, too, not that you'd remember much cos you were probably watching cartoons and stuff like that.
ZAC: Yeah, well, I was a couple years younger as were you!
JACKIE O: Yeah, you were young!
ZAC: It's a logical thing, as time goes by, we grow older!
KYLE: I know, well, I got fatter and Jackie got married, so that's what's happened to us.
JACKIE O: And speaking of marriage, Taylor got married and has a kid!
ZAC: Yes! Taylor has a two-year-old baby boy and he's married, yeah.
KYLE: Now did he marry a fan or did he marry someone who didn't know who you guys were?
ZAC: He married a girl he met in Georgia. She did know who we were but I wouldn't call her a fan in that sense.
KYLE: Yeah, she was hot anyway so he married her.
ZAC: Yeah, exactly. Something like that. There were some of those, you know, enjoying your personality thing and soul mate stuff and then there was the hotness, which was, I'm sure, was the main thing.
KYLE: Now you would have put away a lot of girls since, you know-imagine being as popular as you are, going through puberty, and becoming a man. You would have just had girls lined up outside the door, you would have had to just pick and choose, is that right?
ZAC: I guess if I chose that lifestyle I could have.
JACKIE O: Ooh, as if you wouldn't Zac!
KYLE: Oh, so you don't choose the slutty man lifestyle then?
ZAC: Ah, no, I've always been a sucker for a good romance and the line outside the hotel room isn't very romantic.
JACKIE O: Yeah, well, that's true. I mean, things would have changed a bit and obviously your appearance would have changed a lot, Zac, do you still get recognized when you go out in the streets?
ZAC: Sure, you know, it just all depends on what you're doing or where you are but you know, you still get recognized. We just did a show in the states, I don't know, do you guys get MTV Cribs?
KYLE: Yes, yes, great show!
ZAC: That just aired and some guy walked up to me, like, "man, I was at your house last night, that was so cool! I feel like I'm so close to you!" It was really awkward. He's talking about different spots in my house and I was going, "this is weird!"
KYLE: Yeah, "they know my things! They know my personal business!"
JACKIE O: When you were back in the crazy days of Hanson, things have changed a little bit, things have settled down and you had a bit of a break… do you look back on those times and think, "man, I don't know how I survived that!"?
ZAC: Oh, well, I think you just look back and you go, "wow!" How lucky are you to be able to have that many people looking to you for their music, that many people looking to you to what you're doing to do and say and everything you're doing, and not many people are lucky enough to be put into that position and you just take it as best you can and hope that you've been one of the lucky ones to be able to be in that position. And it is crazy. It's a crazy experience.
JACKIE O: Now you've got the new album coming out in October. Do you hope that Hanson blows up like it was before?
ZAC: I don't think you ever hope for stuff like that. You just hope that you can have people that enjoy your music and speak to people with what you do and you want to get it out to as many people as you can so in that sense you would want to speak to the masses as much as possible.
JACKIE O: And you guys are touring Asia in November, then will you be coming to Australia cos you've still got heaps of fans here.
ZAC: We're definitely hoping to. We don't have any, like, specific dates planned yet but we do want to get down to Australia by the end of this year or early next year.
KYLE: Oh good, and hopefully we won't take you out and do all of the boring things that we did with you last time you were here.
JACKIE O: The koalas and the kangaroos…
ZAC: Definitely not!!
KYLE: Because I imagine artists come here and I imagine all that we do with them is say, "let's cuddle a koala, lets go for a ride on Sydney Harbor, let's go to a freaking zoo". Boring!
ZAC: Yeah, no, let's do something slightly crazier!
KYLE: Yeah, let's have like, a huge pimp party with mauls and everything around!
ZAC: Yeah! (laughs)
JACKIE O: Yeah, that's up his alley. Hey, just before you go Zac the girls just want to know, obviously Taylor is gone; who's single?
ZAC: No one right now!
JACKIE O: You're all taken?
ZAC: I've been with my girlfriend for about three years and Isaac has been recently been taken into a relationship, so I guess he would be your best bet.
KYLE: Now Isaac's not gay, is he?
ZAC: Ah no. No.
KYLE: Okay, so none of you went gay?
ZAC: No, no one went gay, you know, I think that's a popular trend in bands nowadays, you know, you have go to gay.
KYLE: You have to have the gay one!
ZAC: You know, we just didn't feel like following trends. That's not who we are.
KYLE: Well, the gay community in Australia is devastated that no one from Hanson is gay, but hey, the girls are very impressed.
ZAC: It's nothing against them, it's just not my thing.
KYLE: Yeah, well, but you're willing to give it a try every now and then, aren't ya?
ZAC: No, no, don't pull me into your ring of sexual innuendo and adventurous acts…
KYLE: Well look, we think it's great. It's so nice to hear that you guys are still doing your thing and are still enjoying yourself and everyone is growing up and happy and we look forward to hopefully you guys coming here on the backend of your Asia tour.
ZAC: I can't wait to come down, I love Australia, always enjoy it when we're down there and look forward to coming back.
KYLE: Okay, we're going to play the latest song from Hanson, it's called "Penny & Me," it's released today so you can go and buy it and the album if you like all their stuff, if you want to collect all your Hanson albums so that you got all of them, then Underneath comes out in October. Nice to talk to you Zac, say "g'day" to the other fellas for us!
JACKIE O: That's Zac!
ZAC: Hey, thanks so much.
KYLE: Bye! Here they are, Hanson, "Penny & Me" here on the Kyle & Jackie O Show.
