Monster Radio RX 93.1
Manila, Philippines
20 May 2004
BRYAN: Good morning everyone and we have Isaac Hanson, calling us from Lexington, Kentucky. Hi. I understand that you are at Kentucky and you are touring right now, right?
ISAAC: Yeah, we are doing the promotion for the album right now. We are doing little acoustic performances at radio studios in the United States and we are gonna be plugging in doing a full concert in July and hopefully soon after, will be going round the world playing our shows.
BRYAN: Isaac, first and foremost, why don’t you say “hi” to all of your fans here in the Philippines?
ISAAC: Hello everybody. I’m glad that we are talking to you.
BRYAN: There you go. And my partner here today is Chinggay and she is very lovely and willing to talk to you [laughs]
ISAAC: Hi, Chinggay!
CHINGGAY: Hello to you, Isaac. Now, it’s been ten years since you started in this business. What has been the change in you guys aside from growing older, of course?
ISAAC: Well, I think one of the biggest changes in the last couples of years is starting a record company. That was a big change. We just form a record company about a year and a half ago and that has been excited and its been great to be able to change the way that our music released to our fans and to become closer to the audience and just being more control in how music is released and also, Taylor got married, that’s the big difference, you know.
CHINGGAY: Wow… congratulations.
BRYAN: Isaac, another thing. The single “Penny & Me” is roughly one week old and already at #26 on our countdown, so congratulations for that. And we expect that to climb higher. Okay, tell us a little bit more about “Penny & Me” and the album, because we’ve been listening…
CHINGGAY: Yeah, who’s Penny?
BRYAN: First, and foremost, who is Penny?
ISAAC: Penny is both based on reality and fiction. It’s a combination. Penny is the name comes from a famous Beatle’s song “Penny Lane.” Like the other records and lyrics throughout the song and in the album, it talks about not only this person, Penny. It also talks about music through the whole song where Penny is a metaphor for music weaving in and out of your life but also Penny is also about relationship and experiences that always wanting to be with that person that you care about to be around with you.
BRYAN: Okay, now we’ve been listening to “Penny & Me,” it has a higher citation now here in the station. Tell us a little more about your style now cos “Penny & Me” and the album as for say is very mature now as compared to before. Back in the day, your Motown sound is very evident now and you sound very rockish as compared before.
ISAAC: Well, we are always evolving in change depending on the song that pick in the album and so on. And I think its constantly changing. I think the next record will be surprisingly different also. But this record is definitely more organic, more acoustic, more rock than previous album. But I think songs like “Lost Without Each Other,” “Get Up & Go,” “Deeper,” and “Penny & Me” and “Hey” still keep that pop sound but I think they also evolved.
CHINGGAY: When you guys sit down to write songs together, being all brothers, you being the eldest, does that mean you get the last call like, “Hey, we go this way or that…”
ISAAC: Oh no, no. It doest work like that…
CHINGGAY: Really? It’s the opposite?
BRYAN: Say like, you are the big brother so you just bully your brothers off?
ISAAC: No, I’m actually…well, Taylor is taller than me and Zac is stronger than me so I am the weakest of the three brothers. Well, the way the songwriting happens, every song is different. There is a song called “Misery” from the album and the song “Misery” is a really good example of a collaboration. Zac has an idea for the verse until he comes in with his lyrics that was really cool and Tay comes with his idea that he really thought would worked on the song and his lyric idea is “living free” and with the same melody so it goes “living free…” (sings in the tune of “Misery”) and then Zac goes “Okay, dude… that sucks. It’s horrible. It’s just too lightweight. It should be a little morbid.” So it becomes “Misery.” And then I came in and helped with some lyrics and melody verse but it was really good example how things come in and out and different ideas comes form different people and so on…
BRYAN: So, now you have collaborated with different producers/writers to do this particular album and one of them is Gregg Alexander, of course, former vocalist of the New Radicals. So, how did it come to play?
ISAAC: That came about... we really like each other’s music and we called him up and asked him if he wanted to write with us and he was really interested in the idea and really liked the music that we make. He liked the record and he said, “yeah.” So, we spent time together and actually we did, we really wrote a song and the song is “Lost Without Each Other,” which I can’t remember what track number is it in the album. So we wrote that song together and it’s very, very energetic. It has really guitar driven feeling on it, very rock & roll. It’s really a fun song and that’s one of our favorite experiences from this record.
CHINGGAY: Isaac, one of your fans just visited the Philippines last year, Michelle Branch is a big fan of Hanson.
ISAAC: Yeah. She is a fan and a friend. We love Michelle. She is great.
BRYAN: There you go. And she did mention that too. And now, of course, you would be heading on to the Philippines, as well. Your promo tour starts on June 11-12. Now this one include, you’d be all over the place, doing interviews, autograph signing. June 11 as well on our biggest mall here, the SM Megamall and you will also have a live performance over at the Meralco Theater, which is June 12 and which be later aired lived by MTV. So, guys, you’re going to be all over the place this month of June. How does it feel? You guys have a lot of fans. You’ve got a big following here.
ISAAC: We’re really excited about it because it’s going to be our first time in the Philippines and we will just going to bring Tulsa to the world because that’s we’re we come from.
BRYAN: Tulsa, Oklahoma. There you go!
ISAAC: It’s like Hanson to the World… Hanson to the Philippines. It will be really fun. We’re excited about it and I can’t think of a better time doing it. Just looking forward doing it and it would be a lot fun, I’m sure and we’re looking forward of just seeing the fans and we hope that even after that, we’d becoming again for shows and more concerts which we are really excited.
